Waffa Hanania has worked as a criminal defense trial attorney for the majority of her 30-year career representing the indigent accused. She worked with the Public Defender's Office for the Fourth Judicial Circuit for 18 years. Followed by 6 years with the Regional Conflict Counsel's Office, 1st Region. While at the Public Defender's Office, Ms. Hanania worked for many years in the Special Defense Division, which specialized in sexual assault cases, including capital sexual battery. Then she served 7 years in the Homicide Division, including representation of death penalty cases. At the Regional Conflict Counsel's Office, she handled a diverse case load, including homicides. She established a death penalty unit and set standards and procedures for the defense of those cases and the qualifications and training for the attorneys assigned to that unit. Ms. Hanania was the Director the Fourth Judicial Circuit for that office and oversaw the Jacksonville, Clay, and Nassau offices. In 2015, she joined the Federal Defender's Office in the Jacksonville Division.
